Conditionnel passé

What is it?

The compound conditional tense can have different values:

A - Condition: the compound conditional tense is used in a clause A to speak about an event which would have taken place in the past if certain conditions had been met, but were not (the condition is either implied or mentionned in a clause B usually starting with "if" and using an indicative tense).

If I had had more money, I would have bought a new bag.

• Nous serions allé à la plage s'il avait fait plus chaudWe would have been to the beach if it had been sunnier.

• J'aurais beaucoup aimé avoir un chien ! (si ça avait été possible). I would have really much liked to have a dog! (if that had been possible).

B - Alleged facts: the compound conditional tense is often used in journalistic language to speak about past alleged facts. By so doing, the speaker reports facts without considering them as definitely true.

We learnt that the president  have been to the United States last week. (we have been said so)

Unemployement have increased by 0.6% this month. (we have been said so)

C - Reported speech: the compound conditional tense is used in reported speech instead of the compound future tense (futur antérieur) in direct speech. Compare:

David said he would have finished this painting before tonight.

She said lunch would be prepared for 1pm.
